July 22nd, 1967

I go to Haight Street, not expecting to see Rachel. She & Susan sitting upstairs in the Garuda Café. Everybody sitting on pillows at small tables.

They've invited 3 guys to crash for the night, invite me to come with them. One guy attacked by Marines in San Diego. They jumped him, beat him, cut off his hair with a knife. He still has headaches.

Straight guy with goatee picks us up hitch-hiking. Takes out joint & waves it in the air.

“Do you mind?” he asks. “I’m one of those middle-class bureaucrats you’re all talking about.”

He lights up, passes it around, all the time talking about what a great thing is happening here.

20 dead in Newark riots. 12,000 dead in Vietnam. Draft call for 26,000 in September.
