Our big night. She makes steak, strawberries for dessert. We get stoned, make love. Do it 3 more times.
She brings in bowl of fruit. Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & The Fish playing the whole night. Fall to sleep at dawn.
She's a little afraid of one-to-one relationship. Bad experience with Robbie, a boy she went with through high school. He married someone else.
She's the best lover I've ever had. All the time she's telling me what a great lover I am, how I do things she's never done before. I start wondering if it's all a dream.
I tell her if we keep up this pace, I'll fall in love with her.
She tells me to fall in love with her tomorrow, next week, not now.
I tell her I love her even though I don't know if I do, more out of passion.
She wants & doesn't want to hear it. I keep telling her anyway.
We spend the whole day getting dressed & undressed. Smoke a joint. Share a pound cake. Take a stroll on Haight Street.
Hippie girl pretending to take pictures of tourists as they do of hippies. She hands me the camera. I pretend to take a picture of her.
We go to the I & Thou Café. Small narrow place with paintings on the walls & tables that look out on Haight Street. Chess players hunched over tables.
Go home early. Make love again. Sleep till noon.
Beautiful day Sunday. We go to Golden Gate Park, hear about a wedding under the Love Tree. We head for Hippie Hill.
Devotees from the Hare Krishna Temple playing music on top of the hill, chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Rama, dancing, playing kettle drums, congas, blowing conch shells, sitar, finger cymbals.
Girls dressed in saris dance among orange banners. People passing raisins, potato chips, joints around. We hear music from other side of meadow. Go over. Trumpet, sax, drums. Eventually another sax & 3 congas join up. Jazz. A happening.
On way out of park we stop to listen to Ashleigh Brilliant standing on his soapbox. Very witty, former prof at Berkeley. 2 dogs trying to fuck.
Ashleigh: "I'd rather have a good time being bad than a bad time being good!"
We come out the gate at Stanyan Street. Kid on corner: "Want to buy a soul? Anybody want to buy my soul for a nickel?"
We buy fish & chips & go to the I & Thou Café to eat them with cold cider.
